The criteria for all items on this site is pretty much as follows: [1] I must have the actual record in my collection. [2] Almost always, it must be a vinyl pressing from 2000 or later (for earlier pressings see previous webpages). [3] The recording artists must be either from East Asia or connected to Australian East-Asian diasporas.

(2025 – Second full album by Seoul punk band. Singer and lead guitarist, Yeawon Jeong, previously in renowned South Korean punk band Rux. Both their first album and this one, has some great tracks. Along with Leenalchi, my favourite Korean band of recent times. The band has undertaken extensive tours of Europe, North-East Asia (inc. China) and South East Asia.)(Shout out to Jacob Verville who passed on info. back in the past about the Seoul punk scene).

(2023 – 2nd reissue of her 1996 Mandarin album collaborating with Scotland’s Cocteau Twins. Track 2 [浮躁 – Anxiety] [below] with music and lyrics written by Faye Wong – is my favourite track off this album. 1990s mega star and icon of Chinese music, originating from Beijing before being based in Hong Kong. One of the first Chinese pop stars to transcend the industry and call her own shots.)
Faye Wong in Australia: Faye Wong toured Australia in 2000 and performed one concert in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Footage exists but it’s rare. See above ‘Wanted …’ for info. on Faye Wong in Perth staring in a tourism promotional film with Tony Leung.

一无所有 (Nothing to my name)/ 错 / 最后一枪 / 不是我不明白
(2018 – Hard to find vinyl release of early material including tracks from the 1989 landmark 一無所有 album. Most people would probably agree that any conversation about Chinese rock music begins with the title track from this release … it starts off slow but picks up tempo half way through, it takes shape from the mid-way mark. Ethnic Korean Beijing artist ‘widely deemed the most influential rock musician in China’ with historical ‘countercultural impact’. Interestingly, the original album was actually released on vinyl in South Korea on EMI in 1991, but you can do the rounds of the Seoul shops for years and still never find it. It’s pretty rare and expensive. Numbered: my copy is: 0661.)

(2024 – Debut solo album by K-pop mega group BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) member. Stand-out track [IMO] is Apt. with Bruno Mars, currently standing as of typing at 2.38 billion views on YT. New Zealand born raised in Melbourne, Australia who joined BLACKPINK following a competition held in Sydney. Brings Australian English language vocals to the group, and is an example of an emerging dynamic of Australian music artists no longer needing to go to the U.S. or the U.K. to ‘make it big’ internationally.) (Shout out to Jade for pointing me in the direction of this singer.)

(2024 – First album by Sydney hardcore band. The blue vinyl issue limited to 1300 as I understand it. Band members: Aaron Siow, Dennis Vichidvongsa, Jem Siow, Josh Clayton, Kane Vardon connect with the Asian-Australian diasporas in western Sydney, and some of their lyrical content relates to this demographic’s place within Australian hardcore music culture, and Australia in general. The band is increasingly gaining an international following, and it was good to notice they have another Asian tour pending [2026]. Jem Siow, a classical flute musician and music teacher, at times incorporates this instrument within their songs taking the hardcore sound in a new direction. No doubt, the band offers a great [participatory] live experience. The second track [below] off this album resonates with me, because to my ears I can hear some classic late 80s/early 90s Australian hardcore punk [possible influences] in there).

(2020 – First album release. Amazing indie K-Pop sound drawing on traditional Pansori. My equal favourite Korean group in recent years. This release has high quality packaging and is essentially a concept album based on an ancient folktale drawn from Buddhist scriptures. Gatefold cover with poster and inserts including semi-holographic one above depicting the key characters in the ancient epic [642] on which the album is based. Recorded in Paju, on the NK border. Of the two Leenalchi songs below, the second is the best known song from the album, but would also recommend taking a look at some other additional tracks via the Misc. clips link above. ‘The tiger is coming’ is the best known track from the album.)

(2014 – Rare exception as this isn’t a vinyl record. Large colour photo booklet of the group in various locations around Sydney including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Korea Town, streetscapes which look like Surry Hills, and with Australian wildlife. Korean and English language text. Multiple pictures feature the group with Australian make-up artist Martin Bray, likely related to their appearance on SBS TV’s Pop Asia broadcast with local dancers Justice Crew.) (2023 – Vinyl release of 1993 cassette tape release by Manila band. Probably my favourite full album of Philippines alternative rock music from that era – great song-writing on all tracks, especially on my favourite track from the album [below][℗ Reyes Mallare Villa Ubaldo]).

(2016 – reissue of the original 1968 Taiwanese album with this cover, but this is also the 2nd Taiwanese issue ‘晶晶’ from 1969 with that great cover [I used to have it]. It’s her early music but a post-2000 vinyl pressing. Wikipedia notes Teresa Teng as being … ‘widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures in the Chinese-speaking world of the 20th century, she is considered to be one of the most successful and influential Asian musicians of all time’ … the saying went “By day, Deng Xiaoping rules China; by night, Deng Lijun rules”. Legendary icon of East Asian pop music who died in 1995 aged 42. This album is great! … with both guitar and sax breaks. I like her late 60s/early 70s stuff most. Her version of ‘Come on-a my house’ (at the end of clip below) flips from English to Japanese mid-song, and even has odd rockabilly style yips. Numbered: My copy is : 079.)

(2020 – 2nd release, and first album release. Australian recording artist and band from Melbourne. Wikipedia notes Vazer as being from a Vietnamese-Malaysian background, however I included this artist/group on this site due to her/their recent (Oct – 2024, Oct/Nov – 2025) South Korea tours. It’s pretty early to see Australian groups touring South Korea, and this group will be hopefully one of the first of many in the years to come. They played not only the indie-scene hubs in Seoul, but also a good selection of venues beyond the capital. From this album, I really like the track ‘Higher places’ … great intro !).

The upbeat title track is the one that got the most play on HK TV etc, but the track below was the most interesting to me. I like [as with Cui Jian’s ‘Balls under the Red Flag’] the use of traditional instruments. Includes an interesting take on the original Police song. Includes high quality multi-page colour lyric insert booklet.)

(2019 – vinyl and CD combo release of past material including the first album. KL, Malaysia band who helped pioneer the first wave of oi-punk/skinhead music in South East Asia. This album includes a rocksteady version of ‘Fight for your rights’, but I like the version below a bit more, and actually even more so, the demo version that came out on the 1998 EP. That song, as with so much of the other music on this site, comes with reference to context [Malaysia 1990s-2022].)

(2018 – Limited pressing. Busan indie-rock band currently; Sumi Choi, Byungkyu Kim, Sungwan Lim, and Jaeyoung Kim. The founding drummer was Kang Semin. Bass on this album Ha Jaeyoung, and drums Kim Chang-won. The first album ‘We’ve Sobered Up’ [2014] is very Sonic Youth sounding and I like it a lot. I’ll include it [vinyl version] here down the line, no doubt. This album is excellent also, with the track below my favourite … Eddie Cochran inspired intro!) (2022 – The band’s first 12 inch vinyl release that was followed by their March 2023 Southeast-Asia tour with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesian dates. Extended footage of the South-East Asian shows are on Youtube, as well as clips for these tracks. Skillfully manufactured one-sided disc with band pic etched on the flip. Speed are doing music and touring that hasn’t really been done as such before, and [Australian pressing plant] Zenith Records are doing some really innovative releases on the vinyl record pressing front. Both are making the 2020’s Australian music era all that more fun and interesting.)
RAY AHN (안동완) Korean-Australian punk-thrash bass player and vinyl album cover artist, western Sydney 1982-2026+. Played on many vinyl releases before and after 2000.

Acknowledgement: Korean-born Ray Ahn’s family settled in western Sydney in the 1970s. He’s one of the most respected and significant figures in the history of Australian punk music. 한국 태생인 레이 안의 가족은 1970년대 시드니 서부에 정착하였습니다. 그는 호주 펑크 음악사에서 가장 존경받는 상징적인 인물 중 한 명으로 평가받습니다.
